The uppermost surface of a structure, for example the top, end, or tip of an organ such as a lung or the heart.

The pointed portion of any organ which has a conical shape. The apex of each lung reaches about 3·5–5 cm (1••• or 2 inches) above the collar-bone into the neck. In health, the apex of the heart can be felt below the ?fth rib immediately inside the nipple.
