Epispadias: From 3 Different Sources


A rare congenital abnormality in which the opening of the urethra is not in the glans (head) of the penis, but on its upper surface. In some cases, the penis also curves upwards. Surgery is carried out during infancy, using tissue from the foreskin to reconstruct the urethra. (See also hypospadias.)

Exstrophy Of The Bladder

A rare birth defect in which the bladder is turned inside out and is open to the outside of the body through a space in the lower abdominal wall.

Usually, there are also other defects, such as epispadias in males and failure of the pubic bones to join at the front.

Surgical treatment involves reconstructing the bladder and closing the abdominal wall.

If the bladder is very small, it is removed and the urine diverted (see urinary diversion).... exstrophy of the bladder

Exstrophy

n. a severe congenital abnormality in which the bladder fails to close during development: the baby is born with an absent lower abdominal wall and the internal surface of the posterior bladder wall is exposed. It is associated with *epispadias, total urinary incontinence, and undescended testes.... exstrophy

Phalloplasty

n. surgical reconstruction or repair of the penis. It is required for congenital deformity of the penis, as in *hypospadias or *epispadias, and sometimes also following injury to the penis with loss of skin.... phalloplasty
