A term applied to various depressions or holes, both on the surface of the body and in internal parts, such as the iliac fossa in each lower corner of the abdomen, and the fossae within the skull which lodge the di?erent parts of the brain.

The cubital fossa is the triangular hollow at the front of the elbow joint; the iliac fossa is the depression in the inner surface of the ilium; the pituitary fossa is the hollow in the sphenoid bone in which the pituitary gland is situated; a tooth fossa is a pit in the enamel on the surface of a tooth.
