n. a rare tumour that secretes the hormone gastrin, which stimulates excessive gastric acid production. Such tumours most frequently occur in the pancreas; about half of them are malignant. Patients present with intractable gastroduodenal ulceration, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea (the *Zollinger–Ellison syndrome). Gastrinomas may be a feature of *MENS type 1.
n. a tumour that contains *APUD cells and may give rise to symptoms caused by excessive production of the hormones and other peptides that these cells produce. *Carcinoids are a good example of this group of tumours, but there are many others (e.g. *gastrinomas, *somatostatinomas, and *VIPomas).... apudoma
a drug that reduces gastric acid secretion by blocking the *proton pump. Proton-pump inhibitors include esomeprazole, lansoprazole, *omeprazole, pantoprazole, and rabeprazole sodium; they are used for treating gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer, and acid hypersecretion associated with *gastrinoma.... proton-pump inhibitor
a rare disorder in which there is excessive secretion of gastric juice due to high levels of circulating *gastrin, which is produced by a pancreatic tumour (see gastrinoma) or an enlarged pancreas. The high levels of stomach acid cause diarrhoea and peptic ulcers, which may be multiple, in unusual sites (e.g. jejunum), or which may quickly recur after *vagotomy or partial *gastrectomy. Treatment with proton-pump inhibitors, by removal of the tumour (if benign), or by total gastrectomy is usually effective. [R. M. Zollinger (1903–92) and E. H. Ellison (1918–70), US physicians]... zollinger–ellison syndrome
