Hyoid Health Dictionary

A small, U-shaped bone situated centrally in the upper part of the neck. It is not joined to any other bone but is suspended by ligaments from the base of the skull. It provides an anchor point for the muscles of the tongue and of the upper front part of the neck.

A U-shaped bone at the root of the tongue. The hyoid can be felt from the front of the neck, lying about 2·5 cm above the prominence of the thyroid cartilage.
