Hypophysectomy: From 3 Different Sources


The surgical removal or destruction (by means of a radioactive implant) of the pituitary gland.

This may be performed to remove pituitary tumours or to treat some cancers of the breast, ovary, or prostate gland, the growth of which is stimulated by hormones secreted by the pituitary gland.

Nelson’s Syndrome

A rare disorder of the endocrine system that causes increased skin pigmentation. Nelson’s syndrome results from enlargement of the pituitary gland, which can follow removal of the adrenal glands (a treatment for Cushing’s syndrome).
