Lasek: From 1 Different Sources

laser in situ epithelial keratomileusis: a technique of laser refractive eye surgery used to correct both short sight (myopia) and long sight (hypermetropia). A flap of corneal epithelium is raised, the surface of the cornea is reshaped using an *excimer laser, and the epithelium is then replaced.

Excimer Laser

a form of ultraviolet laser that can remove very thin sheets of tissue. This can be used to alter the curvature of the corneal surface, for example to treat long- or short-sightedness (see LASEK; LASIK), or to remove diseased (e.g. calcified) tissue from the corneal surface. See keratectomy.... excimer laser

Myopia

(short-sightedness) n. the condition in which parallel light rays are brought to a focus in front of the retina (see illustration). Closer objects are clearer as compared to distant objects. Myopia is corrected by wearing spectacles with concave lenses; contact lenses and surgery can also be used to correct myopia (see excimer laser; LASEK; LASIK). Compare emmetropia; hypermetropia. —myopic adj.... myopia

Refractive Surgery

any surgical procedure that has as its primary objective the correction of any refractive error. It includes such procedures as clear lens extraction, *LASIK, *LASEK, and photorefractive *keratectomy.... refractive surgery
