in the USA, a programme of health-care services made available to low-income and other needy persons, regardless of age; eligibility criteria differ from state to state. Each state is responsible for its own Medicaid programme, and provides up to half the funding, depending on the state’s per capita income. The programmes cover inpatient hospital services, outpatient hospital services, other laboratory and X-ray services, skilled nursing services, physician services, family-planning services, medical and surgical dentistry, and screening for children under 21.

Charity Patients

in the USA, very low-income patients who receive health care free or at reduced prices; criteria for eligibility differ from state to state, hospital to hospital, and physician to physician. Providers of charity care may be reimbursed through *Medicaid, *Medicare, or other government programmes. So-called medically indigent patients may also be eligible for help. These are patients who earn too much to qualify for charity care but not enough to afford health insurance, and who may incur medical bills that are far beyond their means.
