Any small, nipple-shaped projection from a tissue’s surface, such as the mammary papilla (the breast nipple).
A small projection, such as those with which the corium of the skin is covered, and which project into the epidermis and make its union with the corium more intimate; or those covering the tongue and projecting from its surface.
n. (pl. papillae) any small nipple-shaped protuberance. Several different kinds of papillae occur on the *tongue, in association with the taste buds. The optic papilla is an alternative name for the *optic disc.
