pregnancy-associated plasma protein A: a plasma protein in the serum of pregnant women that is used as a marker for Down’s syndrome (levels are decreased in comparison to normal pregnancies). Measurement of PAPP-A and *human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) can be combined in a *prenatal screening test during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
