These are newly formed red blood corpuscles, in which a ?ne network can be demonstrated by special staining methods. Where a large number are present, one can infer that the patient is recovering from ANAEMIA – for example, after a previous bleed (HAEMORRHAGE) or as a result of treatment of iron de?ciency.

Reticulocyte

n. an immature red blood cell (erythrocyte). Reticulocytes may be detected and counted by staining living red cells with certain basic dyes that result in the formation of a blue precipitate (reticulum) within the reticulocytes.
