Retinal Artery Occlusion: From 2 Different Sources
Blockage of an artery supplying blood to the retina, most commonly due to thrombosis or embolism, The disorder can result in permanent blindness or loss of part of the field of vision, depending on the artery affected and whether or not the condition can be treated quickly enough.

The central retinal artery enters the eye at the optic disc and then divides into branches to supply different parts of the retina. Blockage of the central retinal artery (central retinal artery occlusion) usually results in sudden painless loss of vision. Blockage of one of the branches of the central retinal artery (branch retinal artery occlusion) results in *ischaemia of the retina supplied by the occluded vessel and related visual field loss.

A supportive tube or stent passed into each affected artery can restore the blood supply. The stent has a HEPARIN coating to stop blood clots from forming.
