Softening of the sclera, commonly a complication of scleritis, especially scleritis of rheumatoid arthritis.
n. thinning of the sclera (white of the eye) as a result of inflammation. Sometimes the sclera fades away completely in an area, and the underlying dark-bluish tissue (usually the ciliary body) bulges beneath the conjunctiva. This state is known as scleromalacia perforans.
