Also called tenovaginitis: in?ammation of a TENDON and of the sheath enveloping it.
(tenovaginitis) n. inflammatory thickening of the fibrous sheath containing one or more tendons, usually caused by repeated minor injury. It usually occurs at the back of the thumb (de Quervain’s tendovaginitis) and results in pain on using the wrists. Treatment is by rest, injection of cortisone into the tendon sheath, and, if these fail, surgical incision of the sheath.
n. 1. a crackling sound or grating feeling produced by bone rubbing on bone or roughened cartilage, detected by palpation on movement of an arthritic joint. Crepitus in the knee joint is a common sign of *chondromalacia patellae in the young and *osteoarthritis in the elderly. 2. a similar sound heard with a stethoscope over an inflamed lung when the patient breathes in. 3. a similar sound heard over an inflamed extensor tendon in the hand in *scleroderma caused by thickening of the skin, or over a tendon injured by repetitive use in de Quervain’s *tendovaginitis.... crepitus
(RSI) pain in an upper limb associated with frequent repetition of a particular movement, usually related to keyboard usage. Symptoms often occur in the absence of clear signs, such as *tenosynovitis or *tendovaginitis, which presents difficulties both in treatment and in claiming compensation from an employer (if an industrial cause can be identified).... repetitive strain injury
