Transamination Health Dictionary

Transamination: From 1 Different Sources

n. a process involved in the metabolism of amino acids in which amino groups (–NH2) are transferred from amino acids to certain ?-keto acids, with the production of a second keto acid and amino acid. The reaction is catalysed by enzymes (see transaminase), which require pyridoxal phosphate as a coenzyme.

Alanine Aminotransferase

(ALT) an enzyme involved in the transamination of amino acids. Measurement of ALT in the serum is of use in the diagnosis and study of acute liver disease. It was formerly called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT).... alanine aminotransferase

Aspartate Aminotransferase

(AST) an enzyme involved in the transamination of amino acids. Measurement of AST in the serum may be used in the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and acute liver disease. It was formerly called serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT).... aspartate aminotransferase

Pyridoxal Phosphate

a derivative of vitamin B6 that is an important *coenzyme in certain reactions of amino-acid metabolism. See transamination.... pyridoxal phosphate

Transaminase

n. an enzyme that catalyses the transfer of an amino group from an amino acid to an ?-keto acid in the process of *transamination. Examples include *aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which catalyses the transamination of glutamate and oxaloacetate to ?-ketoglutarate and aspartate, and *alanine aminotransferase (ALT), converting glutamate and pyruvate to ?-ketoglutarate and alanine.... transaminase

Vitamin

B6 (pyridoxine) a vitamin of the B complex from which the coenzyme *pyridoxal phosphate, involved in the transamination of amino acids, is formed. The vitamin is found in most foods and a deficiency is therefore rare. The adult RNI (see Dietary Reference Values) is 15 ?g/g dietary protein.... vitamin
