A voluntary-muscle relaxant given by intravenous injection before surgery under general ANAESTHESIA. The drug is also used to treat conditions such as TETANUS, ENCEPHALITIS and POLIOMYELITIS in which severe muscle spasms occur. Overdosage may result in respiratory failure because the muscles essential for breathing are paralysed.
