the most common cause of *intrauterine growth restriction, due to abnormalities in placental development and *trophoblast invasion. The exact cause may be unknown or due to a number of recognizable causes, e.g. pre-eclampsia, inherited *thrombophilias causing placental infarction or thrombosis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. It may lead to stillbirth.
